Customize Your Google Chrome Application Icons by Webapp

Customize Your Google Chrome Application Icons by WebappGoogle Chrome’s application shortcuts turn any web site into a separate item on your Windows 7 taskbar, but unfortunately many sites have low-res icons that make your taskbar ugly. Here’s the simple trick to make your taskbar beautiful again.

Once you’ve pinned a shortcut to your taskbar, you can still modify the shortcut properties by right-clicking on the taskbar button, and then right-clicking again on the name of the shortcut. From there, you can access the real Properties menu for the shortcut. Of course, if you haven’t pinned the shortcut to your taskbar, you can access the same Properties menu from the shortcut in the Start Menu.

Click the Change Icon button, and then browse to find a new high quality icon on your system—this can be one of the built-in Windows icons, but for best results you can find a better icon on a site like IconFinder. Make sure to grab the highest quality one you can find, download it as an .ICO file, and save that file in a safe location on your system—I put mine into my Dropbox folder.

Once you’re done, you might notice that it sometimes takes a minute for the change to take effect, but sometimes closing and re-opening the application helps speed the process along.

I’ve personally used this technique to use different icons for different sessions to the same web site, or just to improve the quality of the icon, like the Remember the Milk icon shown in the screenshot above, which you can download from here.

Creating Invisible Folder in Windows

If you have folders on your computer that you want to keep private, this trick will work for you, you just need to remember where you placed them. This hidden folder can be made; however, it is necessary to show all the folders whenever it is required. How can you make an invisible folder? You have to follow these simple steps and your unmentionables will stay hidden away.
1. Decide where you want the invisible folder to be located, right click on that location and select the option “Create a new folder.”

2. Select the folder, right click on it and click on rename option.
3. If you attempt to end here, windows will say that you must provide a name. Here are the instructions to solve this problem. With the number lock on and the field name still active, press and hold ALT and press 0160 on the number pad – then release ALT. A folder should appear with a blank name next to it. 4. Right click on the folder without a name. Choose Properties.

5. Click on the Customize tab.

6. Click on the Change Icon button. Browse through your icons until you find the one that has no image.
7. Click on OK and your folder becomes invisible!
It will allow you to hide things that you don’t want readily available to anyone else. You will be able to hide anything from video games at your workplace, to family pictures or anything else you can think of. If you place it on your desktop, the folder will appear briefly. Due to this, it would be a wise idea to put it inside of a folder, or to hide it amongst a group of folders where it would be less likely to be seen. Enjoy hiding!

How to remove Virus from USB Drives

One of the ways by which a virus can infect your PC is through USB/Pen drives. Common viruses such as ’Ravmon’ , ‘New Folder.exe’, ‘Orkut is banned’ etc are spreading through USB drives. Most anti virus programs are unable to detect them and even if they do, in most cases they are unable to delete the file, only quarantine it. Here are the things which you can do if you want to remove such viruses from your USB Drive

Whenever you plug a USB drive in your system, a window will appear similar to the one shown below

USB

Don’t click on Ok , just choose ‘Cancel’. Open the Command Prompt by typing ‘cmd‘ in the run box. In the command prompt type the drive letter: and press enter . Now type dir /w/a and press enter.

This will display a list of the files in the pen drive. Check whether the following files are there or not

  • Autorun.inf
  • Ravmon.exe
  • New Folder.exe
  • svchost.exe
  • Heap41a
  • or any other exe file which may be suspicious.

If any of the above files are there, then probably the USB drive is infected. In command prompt type attrib -r -a -s -h *.* and press enter. This will remove the Read Only, Archive, System and hidden file attribute from all the files. Now just delete the files using the command del filename. example del Ravmon.exe. Delete all the files that are suspicious. To be on a safer side, just scan the USB drive with an anti virus program to check whether it is free of virus or not. Now remove the drive and plug it again. In most of the cases, the real culprit turns out to be the “Autorun.inf” file which mostly gets executed when someone clicks Ok in the dialog window which appears above. Thus the infections can spread

Security Tip

Disable the Autoplay feature of USB drives. If you disable the Autoplay feature of USB drives, then there are lesser chances of the virus spreading. A tool which can perform such a function is Tweak UI. Download it from here install it.

Tweak UI

Run the program. Now you can disable the Autoplay feature of the removable drives as shown above. By following the above steps, you can keep your USB drives clean.
